“The Real Party of The Environment” a leaflet from Michael McDowell of The Progressive Democrats from the 1997 General Election. Despite the leaflet McDowell lost his seat with John Gormley of The Green Party winning a seat instead. As the Greens were making progress in the polls, in elections between 1997 and 2007 all parties tried to show off their environmental credentials.

From the 1977 General Election “Vote Labour. Here are five good reasons why. “. The five reasons are the outgoing Labour Ministers Brendan Corish, James Tully , Michael O’Leary, Conor Cruise O’Brien and Justin Keating (of which two Conor Cruise O’Brien and Justin Keating lost their seats) and there is a piece on the achievements of each Minister whilst in office.

From 1988 a pamphlet from Fine Gael written by Gay Mitchell outlining various Policy proposals for Dublin. Makes interesting reading now as some of the proposals have happened , others modified and others like an airport at the IFSC haven’t happened at all.

From the 1999 Local Elections a leaflet from Labour South East Inner City candidate Kevin Humphreys on “Tackling The Housing Crisis”. The leaflet outlines the housing crisis and offers various solutions. There is also a message of support from Ruairi Quinn.

From September 2007 a letter from Eamon Gilmore to Labour Party members outlining his aims for the Party. These aims included winning 30 seats at the next General Election and an open style of leadership. For some reason he also mentions a timeframe of six years.

From I think the 1986 Fine Gael Ard Fheis a leaflet advertising a meeting on ‘Basic Income’ from Young Fine Gael. The Basic Income was an idea also put forward by The Green Party at the time. Although it doesn’t directly mention it, there were many theories at the time regarding ‘The Leisure Age’, how as our jobs were replaced by machines we would have more time on our hands and the concept of employment would change.

A letter to Labour Party Members from Tipperary North TD Alan Kelly who is running for the Deputy Leadership of the Labour Party.

In the 1948 General Election, long serving Fianna Fail TD for Tipperary Andrew Fogarty lost his seat. A presentation was organised and subscriptions collected. This is a letter from Fianna Fail General Secretary Bill Quirke (info on him here) thanking the recipient for his donation of £5. The letter also contained a list of subscribers with the amounts they donated. The names on the list of contributors includes Dan Breen, Sean Lemass, WJ Magner, Harry Colley, Sean McEntee, Erskine Childers many more TDs and Senators , a number of clergy and a host of other individuals . Naturally many of the names are from Tipperary.

The Dáil being Televised regularly was once a big issue. The following Discussion Documentissued by Fine Gael in May 1988 gives arguements for and against the Televising the Dáil, The practicalities of it and also has a section on ‘presenting the Dáil at its best’. From the 1973 General Election campaign a leaflet from Fianna Fail promising that were they elected Rates would be abolished. They weren’t elected and when returned to power in 1977 Domestic Rates were abolished.

A leaflet that is in part rhyming from James Malone who was running as an Independent in Newry in the 2014 Local Elections. He polled 41 votes and failed to win a seat.
