From a 1992 Progressive Democrat leaflet Dessie O’Malley outlines the position of the party regarding the 3 Abortion Referenda to be held on the same day as the General Election. Whilst they asked for a YEs vote for the Right to Travel and Right to Information, they asked for a NO vote on the Abortion issue. Many of the reasons for voting against the Referendum outlined by O’Malley are just as relevant today as they were then.

(All editions to date are here) There’s quite a bit of interest in it, including an article by Cllr Cathal Crowe on his collection of old political memorabilia. The cover of the magazine caused some controversy and was a topic on Joe Duffys Liveline.

From the 1987 General Election, ‘Ryan Stands on His Record’,  a leaflet from Labour Party TD for Tipperary North John Ryan outlining what had been delivered by the coalition government both Locally and Nationally over the previous five years.
Ryan polled 4,558 votes and missed out on a seat as newcomer Michael Lowry claimed a seat for Fine Gael and Michael O’Kennedy and Michael Smith won seats for Fianna Fail.

This issue is quite important as its the first issue post the Split and formation of Republican Sinn Fein. The leaflet gives details of the split and the reasons behind it as well as details of the founding of the party and the partys executive as well as other news from the time.

From the Autumn 2005 edition of the Fianna Fail paper ‘The Nation’ a transcript of a speech given by then Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to the Fianna Fail Parliamentary Party meeting in Cavan on September 5th 2005. The headline of “Fianna Fail Will Never Take Risks With The Economy” particularly caught my eye. You may notice too that the statement was made at Sean Quinn’s Slieve Russel Hotel.

The flyer gives details of Advice centres, his availability and that even if hes not present that he will ‘Personally deal with the query later’. For groups or organisations there were invites to make ‘Special Arrangements’ to meet him in St Lukes.

An interesting piece on your rights with regard to ‘Corporal Punishment in National Schools’ from a 1969 publication ‘Action’ printed and published by the Sean Heuston Branch of the Labour Party.
It outlines (what they thought) the cause of Corporal Punishment was in overcrowded classrooms and that ‘Beating is a British Legacy’. There are details of the law at the time with regards to when and by whom Corporal Punishment could be administered in National Schools. It gives details of who to contact including an organisation called ‘Reform’ which ‘was founded to combat excessive punishment in the schools.’
