“Resist The Dublin Dons”- Flyer for National League United meeting against move of Wimbledon to Dublin. April 26, 2012

A flyer for a meeting of ‘National League United’ against the proposed move of Wimbledon FC to Dublin to become the Dublin Dons. The move was first proposed in 1996 and the idea of Dublin being home to a Premier League Soccer team appealed to many. Amongst those enthusiastic about the move were Eamon Dunphy, Paul McGuinness and Owen O’Callaghan.
A stadium in Neilstown was to be built and Shelbourne had agreed to let them play in Tolka Park whilst the ground was being built.

Many thanks to Fergus Desmond of The Shamrock Rovers Heritage Trust for the use of the image.

“Lousers!” -Wonderful poster from William Norton Labour Party -1926 Dublin County By Election April 16, 2012

From the 1926 Dublin County By-Election a wonderful poster for former Tainiste and Labour Party Leader William Norton. The poster attacks a statement made by Professor Michael Tierney TD (Later President of UCD) speaking at a rally in support of Thomas Healy (the government candidate) where he said that
“..it was not a question of Unemployment, the trouble was the Lousers (meaning the Unemployed Workers) would not work.”
William Norton was elected.

Two Anti-Treaty Political Cartoons from 1922

Tags: , , , , , ,

The wonderful Capuchin Archives, Ireland Facebook page has been posting some brilliant historical images recently.
Amongst them these two items….
The first is

A Republican cartoon published during the Civil War attacking Michael Collins. Collins was Minister for Finance and TD for Cork South in the First Dáil of 1919, Director of Intelligence for the IRA, and member of the Irish delegation during the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations. Subsequently, he was both Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State and Commander-in-Chief of the National Army. The cartoon draws an explicit comparison Collins and James Craig, the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party and the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. The cartoon was probably prepared for publication in the Anti-Treaty newsletter ‘The Fenian’.

The second

A Republican cartoon published during the Civil War attacking the leaders of the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State, Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins. The cartoon refers to the recent death of the Anti-Treaty leader, Cathal Brugha and affirms that Griffith and Collins are ‘marching heads up into the Empire over the bodies of their murdered Comrades’. Brugha was involved in fighting on O’Connell Street at the outbreak of the Civil War. He died on 7 July 1922 from a bullet wound sustained in hostilities against Free State forces. The cartoon was probably prepared for publication in the Anti-Treaty newsletter ‘The Fenian’.

A historic moment in Dublin Transport history ..the last scheduled run in Dublin of an open backed bus April 8, 2012

Filed under: Ireland — irishelectionliterature @ 10:01 pm

Something very different from what I usually post…. A historic moment in Dublin Transport history took place on Saturday the 27th of March 1982. It was the last scheduled run in Dublin of an open backed bus (RA 138 model). The run took place on the 23 route to Drimnagh.
My Father, who had heard that the final run was happening, brought me along. A crowd assembled at the Conyngham Road Bus Garage and had their picture taken with 5 different types of bus with the old one (an R 1 ?) coming up from the Transport Museum for the day. The other 4 would have been in service at the time.(I’m 4th from the left in the anorak)
Oddly enough I later worked in Dublin Bus, being one of the last Bus Conductors.

Leaflet from Conor Cruise O’Brien, Joe O’Connor, Paddy Dunne -Labour – 1973 General Election Dublin North East April 4, 2012

Paddy Dunne was a longstanding Labour Councillor and former Lord Mayor of Dublin who stood in numerous General Elections without success. In 1981 he was nominated to the Seanad.
Joe O’Connor ran again a year later in the Local Elections but failed to win a seat.
Conor Cruise O’Brien had first been elected in 1969 and after this 1973 election was appointed to cabinet as Minister for Posts and Telegraphs. He lost his seat in 1977 and served two years in the Seanad. He later joined Robert McCartneys United Kingdom Unionist Party and was elected to the Northern Ireland Forum. He is also well known as a writer of many books and a columnist with the Irish Independent.
