“Arise and follow Charlie” -Fianna Fail 1981 General Election Song November 15, 2011

From the 1981 General Election the Fianna Fail anthem “Arise and follow Charlie” in praise of then leader Charlie Haughey.

From southern glens to Aston Shores
The ancient cry of freedom roars
From Northern hills to Leinster’s doors
We’ll rise and follow Charlie

With Charlie’s song we’ll sing as one
With Charlie’s song we’ll sing along
With Charlie’s song we’ll march along
We’ll Rise and Follow Charlie

Hail the leader, hail the man
With Freedom’s cause it all began
With Irish Pride in every man
We’ll Rise and Follow Charlie

With Charlie’s song we’ll sing as one
With Charlie’s song we’ll sing along
With Charlie’s song we’ll march along
We’ll Rise and Follow Charlie

Young and old we all approve
He’s kept the Country on the move
He’ll help the Nation to improve
So Rise and Follow Charlie

With Charlie’s song we’ll sing as one
With Charlie’s song we’ll sing along
With Charlie’s song we’ll march along
We’ll Rise and Follow Charlie

This is a great leaflet from prospective Fianna Fail candidate Jimmy Guerin for the 2009 Local elections in Howth / Malahide. Guerin mustn’t have got the nomination that he mentions at the beginning of the leaflet and ran as an Independent polling 1,814 votes. He also ran in the 2011 General election in Dublin North East.
He is the brother of the late Veronica Guerin.
Many thanks to the sender who notes …
“The anti-heroin message aimed at genteel Howth and Portmarnock still amuses me.”

Flyer from Dan Moloney -Fianna Fail -1956 Kerry North Bye Election

From the 1956 Kerry North Bye-Election a flyer from Fianna Fail candidate Daniel J Moloney. An unusual Slogan too in “Moloney is the word and Moloney is the man”.
The Listowel based Moloney lost out to Clann Na Poblachtas Kathleen O’Connor (Daughter of Johnny Connor whose death caused the By Election, She was 21 years, 7 months old when elected, making her the third youngest ever person elected to the Dáil after William J. Murphy and Lorcan Allen). Moloney was elected in the subsequent 1957 General Election before losing his seat in 1961. He passed away in 1963.
Many thanks to the sender.

Fianna Fail 1933 “All Land Annuities will be reduced by one-half” October 17, 2011

A little bit of Irish History here. From the 1933 General Election Fianna Fails promise that “All Land Annuities will be reduced by one-half”. It goes on to gives details of the proposed changes. We also have details of the various achievements of Fianna Fail in government since 1932 in the “For the first time in a hundred years” section.
There’s a good piece on History Ireland on the Land Annuities.

From Cavan 1969 “Fianna Fail Stands For Progress And Prosperity” October 16, 2011

From the 1969 General Election in Cavan “Fianna Fail Stands For Progress And Prosperity”. The Fianna Fail candidates were Paddy Smith, Richard Black and Seamus Dolan with Smith being elected.
There are attacks on Fine Gael and Labour including that

“Labour wants to disgrace us in the eyes of the world by opening an embassy in Cuba a Communist Dictatorship in Latin America”

Was sent this image with no extra info. It looks to be a fairly young Dev, however there is no election related slogan on it so its hard to figure out how old it is.
Many thanks to the sender.

Wonderful 1938 Election Labour Party leaflet concerning Fianna Fails appeals for Unionist support

From the 1938 General Election a fantastic anti Fianna Fail leaflet from the Labour Party. The Leaflet quotes from Padraig Pearse and Terrence MacSwiney and provides evidence that Fianna Fail is appealing for Unionist support.

“Fianna Fail was the first political party to voluntarily proclaim an English King as King of Ireland”

Not alone that but

“… It now advertises exclusively in “The Irish Times” …”

Labour won 13 seats in 1937 but only returned 9 seats in this 1938 General Election.
Many thanks to the sender.

Leaflet from David McGuinness -Fianna Fail -2011 Dublin West By-Election October 8, 2011

From the 2011 Dublin West By-Election a leaflet from Fianna Fail candidate David McGuinness. Amongst his priorities are

Mortgage Pressures
The economic and social plight of families with unsustainable mortgages must be tackled…

Protecting the Vulnerable

We have to restore the economy and protect the most vulnerable as we do so. Thats why I will oppose Government proposals to introduce extra income tax increases and to cut welfare and pensions in December’s budget.”

Supporting our Schools
I will campaign for funding for extra school places. The Government proposes to raise the school starting age to 6, to increase class sizes and to end transition year. I will oppose these short sighted cuts.

Saw this and was amused at the Fianna Fail ad at the side of the pitch.  The game was held 11 days prior to the 1989 European and General Elections.
Haven’t seen much political sponsorship at sporting events , the last time was possibly Sinn Fein sponsoring a Bohs game in I think 2004 or 2007. Anyone any other examples?

From 1944 “The Taoiseach’s Message” -Eamon De Valera -Fianna Fail September 25, 2011

From the 1944 General Election a message to the electorate from then Taoiseach and Fianna Fail Leader Eamon De Valera. In this 1944 Election Fianna Fail gained 9 seats and had an overall majority.
Interesting to see a lot of the message given over to the ills of coalition governments.

John O’Donoghue Speech to the 2005 Fianna Fail Ard Fheis. September 16, 2011

John O’Donoghues speech to the 2005 Fianna Fail Ard Fheis in Killarney. Its very much typical of its time, full of praise for Fianna Fail, mirth for Fine Gael, Labour, The Greens and other. There’s a confidence in Fianna Fails message that no longer exists.

O’Donoghue states “It takes a hundred Years to build a forest … and only one night to burn it down again”
Its almost apt for Fianna Fail …. the one night for Fianna Fail was the Bank Guarantee.
