From the 1992 General Election in Dun Laoghaire a letter to voters from the Democratic Lefts Eamon Gilmore.
One line in particular stands out “….that substance and policy are more important than style and performance”.
Eamon Gilmore was elected, which was a decent performance considering the Spring Tide.

“..Substance and policy are more important than style and performance”- Eamon Gilmore 1992 Letter to Voters October 11, 2010
including “A message of support from Paul McGrath” -Victor Boyhan -Independent -Blackrock 2009 LE October 8, 2010
From the 2009 Local Elections in Blackrock an election leaflet from Independent candidate (and former PD councillor) Victor Boyhan. Interestingly, a page of it is taken up with a message of support from Paul McGrath. McGrath and Boyhan spent many years together in the “Birds Nest” home on York Road in Dun Laoghaire and later down in Monkstown.
In McGraths acclaimed book “Back from the Brink” Victor Boyhan gets a number of mentions. Including “…he became one of the most outspoken voices in ensuring that Smyly Trust Homes would be covered under the State Redress Scheme, investigating the abuse of children.”
Boyhan who lost his seat in 2004 regained it here in 2009.

Brian Lenihan TD – ‘Making Ireland Greener and Cleaner’ – 2006 Newsletter October 1, 2010
A 2006 Newsletter from then Minister for Children Brian Lenihan. The theme of the Dublin West Fianna Fail TDs newsletter was “Making Ireland Greener and Cleaner”
Amongst the issues covered were Recyling, Sellafield, Bio Fuels etc. It was part of an effort by all parties to show they had a Green agenda to stifle the Green Party.
Like many such party newsletters they have similar content with just the TDs details and a bit of local information added.
As its large I’ve uploaded the newsletter in *.pdf HERE. … or click on the image below to open the newsletter.
‘What Do You Want Your Taxes Spent On?’- the latest No to Metro North poster September 30, 2010
The latest No to Metro North poster to pop up around Dublin.
I gather the chap who owns Carrolls gift stores is one of the main people behind the campaign.
From the little I’ve read on the topic ….it looks as if they are afraid of something similar to what happened on Harcourt Street during the building of the LUAS lines. A number of businesses failed due to the street being a construction site. They also received no compensation and still had to pay their rates to the City Council. (I may be wrong though)
(many thanks to the sender)

A leaflet produced by Independent candidate Cieran Perry in late 2006 detailing issues that he had been involved with. The range of issues gives an indication of what an active Local Representative is involved in.

Ruairi Quinn Leaflet -1992 General Election -Dublin South East September 29, 2010
From the 1992 General Election a leaflet from Labour candidate in Dublin South East Ruairi Quinn. Quinn polled 10,381 votes and was elected on the first count with well over a quota.
On the front of the leaflet is Ruairi Quinn with Dick Spring and a nice message from Spring.
On the inside is a critique of the FF/PD government. There were 300,000 unemployed. Major Property Owners and farmers were amongst those that Labour wanted to pay their ‘Fair Share’ in Tax.

Living with Management Companies -Public Meeting with Joan Burton and Aidan Culhane-22nd Sept 2010 September 18, 2010
Thought this of interest, a flyer for a meeting organised by Labour Councillor Aidan Culhane, with amongst others Joan Burton speaking, on how to deal with Management companies.
Ten years ago few of us had any dealings with them but the upsurge in Management companies was a side effect of the property boom. Most new Estates and Apartment Blocks rather than have the council maintain them had Management Companies. Indeed often (if not always) the first years management fee had to be paid when buying a property. Often Management Companies were set up by the developers so they made on the double.
As times have got harder its another bill that in the current climate is often back of the queue for paying, so in some developments less than 50% of homeowners would have paid.
There is also a problem that in some contracts, you cannot sell unless the management fees are up to date.
Might be an interesting talk.
Many thanks to the sender.

“Don’t Kill Dublin City – No To Metro North”
Was sent this (many thanks) and was unaware of a campaign against Metro North. Its seen as a 15 billion Euro White Elephant.
I gather that these posters are appearing around Town at the minute too.
There is a No To Metro North Facebook group also.

“Kiss With Your Eyes Closed -Vote With Your Eyes Open” -Ivana Bacik -2004 Euro Elections September 16, 2010
From the 2004 European Elections flyers from Labour candidate Ivana Bacik. She failed to win a seat.
The flyers caused a bit of a stir at the time given the association between kissing and voting. They were distributed in pubs and clubs during the campaign.
The sender (many thanks) notes “..original Ivana Bacik postcard from Euro election 2004. This version was used as a postcard, a large version was used for washroom adverts. The reverse side of this postcard has a sticker that was used at a post – election thank you event.”
I gather the initial flyers (a the bottom of the post) I posted were an online one.
