“A personal message from Liam Cosgrave” Vote Yes to the EEC – 1972 Referendum on Entry to the EEC November 7, 2010
From the 1972 Referendum on entry to the EEC an ad from Fine Gael urging a Yes vote.
Amongst the arguments used are that Britain will be entering and as they accounted for 65% of our exports that Ireland has to enter too.
We will be attractive for Foreign investment and the EEC will pay the farming subsidies that Taxpayers paid.
There was also the argument that if the North was in the EEC and we were not, then reunification of the island would be more difficult.
The Referendum was passed.

“Regulation and The Economy” -Leaflet from Labour 1997 General Election November 6, 2010
One of a series of policy leaflets from the Labour Party 1997 Election campaign. This Leaflet 6 focuses on “Regulation and The Economy”.
Needless to say the following paragraphs stand out.
“There is a special need for regulation for banks … The banking system is vital to the working of economic life in the country.
The Central Bank is the regulator for these businesses.
Any bank would have to close down if everyone who has a deposit with it asked for their money back at the same time. It is up to the Central Bank to make sure that banks and building societies are run carefully and prudently. It is the only way to make sure that people have confidence in the banking system and are happy to leave their money in the custody of the banks.
A modern economy cannot work with just paper money. It has to have a developed banking system. It is as important as electricity to a society like ours. Therefore the first task of the Central Bank is to make sure that the banking system never breaks down.”
“We have a social market economy in Ireland. History has shown us that a market economy is the way to provide employment and prosperity to a society.
But experience also tells us that it is essential that the market is accompanied by well-developed public services. it is also essential, not least tor the proper functioning of the market itself, that business is constrained by appropriate regulation.
Market forces acting on their own can be destructive and damage the interests of workers, commerce and society in general. That is why a well- regulated economy, which protects, by law, the interests of all the citizens is essential to our society. Economic justice and equality is not possible without it.”
Mary Rachel Brophy , William Dockerell -Fine Gael -1999 LE Blackrock
From the 1999 Local Elections a flyer for Fine Gael candidates Mary Rachel Brophy and William Dockrell running for Fine Gael in Blackrock.
Mary Rachel Brophy would be best known for her founding of ‘Festina Lente‘ which uses Horses and horticulture to provide “a range of training, occupational, learning and employment opportunities for people whose needs are not being met in mainstream services”.
William Dockrell has an impressive political pedigree. He is the son of former TD Percy Dockrell, grandson of former TD Henry Morgan Dockrell, great grandson of Sir Maurice Dockrell a former Unionist MP. He is also brother of former councillor John H. Dockrell.

Cheesy Fianna Fail Poster for next General Election November 5, 2010
Was pointed in this direction today. I laughed.
I gather too that Free Cheese is given out every year, only this year they made it public….. So whilst FF think up 7 billion in cuts … we’re talking about Cheese.
From the 2007 General Election Brian Lenihans ‘Health’ Newsletter
From March 2007 a newsletter from the then Minister for Children Brian Lenihan. The subject of the newsletter is Health and the advances in facilities in Dublin West.
These days it’s unusual to see him so delighted with spending money on anything.

Neal Richmond Winter 2009 Newsletter -Fine Gael-Glencullen Sandyford
A winter 2009 Newsletter from Fine Gael councillor for Glencullen Sandyford Neale Richmond. Covers local issues and has a message from Dublin Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell.
Tom Cribbin – ‘Independant’ -Edenderry -2009 LE November 4, 2010
I love this 2009 leaflet from ‘Independant’ Tom Cribbin running for Edenderry Town Council and Offaly County Council. I’m puzzled if the spelling mistake is deliberate or not.
Cribbin, a long standing Councillor resigned from Fianna Fail in protest at the party’s selection procedure for local election candidates prior to the 2009 Local Elections. He ran as an Independent.
He failed to win a seat on Offaly County Council and I’m unsure if he won a seat or not on Edenderry Town Council.

Jane Mullins -Progressive Democrats -Kildare South -2007 General Election
From the 2007 General Election a leaflet from Progressive Democrat candidate Jane Mullins running in Kildare South. Mullins polled 1,513 votes and failed to be elected.

Letter to voters from Tony McDermott -Green Party -Crumlin Kimmage -2009 LE
From the 2009 Local Elections a letter to voters from Green Party Candidate Tony McDermott running in the Crumlin Kimmage Ward. The Harolds Cross based McDermott had been elected to South Dublin County Council in 2004 for the Terenure Rathfarnham LEA. Amongst other reasons, Boundary changes meant he stood for Dublin City Council in 2009. He failed to win a seat.
‘One of The Best ‘ Eamon Gilmore -Democratic Left- Dun Laoghaire 1992 GE November 3, 2010
From the 1992 General Election a leaflet from the then Democratic Left TD Eamon Gilmore running in Dun Laoghaire.
Some lovely slogans in ‘One of The Best‘ and ‘Make Sure Vote Gilmore‘.
We get details of how much Gilmore speaks in the Dail. The Leaflet also mentions that Gilmore ‘began the organisation of the first Peace Train‘.
(I had my doubts but here he is at the First Peace Train.)
We learn too that “He helped lead the campaign to reform his old party, and was one of the first to leave to form Democratic Left” (Should read to form New Agenda which became Democratic Left).
Gilmore was elected easily having polled 7,045 votes.
Renee Prendergast -Official Sinn Fein -1975 Galway By-Election
These few clippings are from the 1975 Galway West By Election caused by the death of Fianna Fail TD John Geoghegan and won by his daughter Maire Geoghegan Quinn.
They give an illustration of OSF policy and thinking at the time . Considering it was 1975 the quote of “Our minerals, oil and gas which successive governments have sold out must be taken back by the Irish people” still holds fairly true.
Renee Prendergast polled 656 votes.
Clippings from The Galway Advertiser.

Stephen Keary -Fine Gael – Rathkeale 2009 LE
From the 2009 Local Elections a Leaflet for Fine Gael candidate Stephen Keary running in Rathkeale. Keary, who had missed out in 2004 was easily elected.
Amongst the items in the leaflet is his fixlimerick.ie website. Its an interesting idea .

“A Changing State -Reforming and Rewarding the Public Service” – March 1996 Progressive Democrats November 2, 2010
This was sent to me a while back (many thanks) .
From 1996 a Progressive Democrats a 27 page Document on the Reform of the Public Service. Its pretty interesting considering that they were in power from 1997 until their demise.
