From 2003 ‘Re-Inventing Democracy’ A Green Party/Comhaontas Glas Discussion Document on Oireachtas and Institutional Reform which I thought might be of interest given the ongoing debates on political Reform.
The Presidency, Dáil Éireann, Seanad Éireann, Regional Government/Local Government, Bunreacht na hÉireann/ The Constitution and Legislative Changes are the areas covered.

From the Document “Summary of Proposals in relation to Dáil Éireann”
– Dáil Éireann to sit for 45 of the 52 weeks of the year
– Sittings to be held from Monday afternoons to Friday lunchtimes
– Sittings to begin as early as 9.30am but end no later than 7pm
– Proposals to change Dáil sitting arrangements to be agreed by no less than two thirds of the membership of the Dáil
– Membership of the Dáil to be reduced from 166 members to 130 members
– Membership of the Cabinet to be reduced from 15 members to 12
– The office of Minister of State to be abolished
– Consideration to be given to change electoral system to Dáil Éireann
– Return to the previous system of Leaders’ Question – three days a week on a round robin questioning basis
– Increase powers of Ceann Comhairle obliging members of the government to give full and adequate information to the Dáil
– Increase Private Members Time and allocate on a more regular basis
– Replace adjournment debates with commencement debates chosen through lottery
– Link expenses received to participation in Oireachtas votes
– Give Oireachtas committees powers of compellability
– Allocate Committee Chairs under D’Hondt system
– Change of standing order on the recognition of parties in the Dáil from seven members to five, however formed in the lifetime of the Dáil
– Give all Oireachtas committees the power of compellability
– Outside interest groups to direct input at committee stage of relevant legislation
– Power of Taoiseach to call early election to be removed
The only mention of anything touching Gender is in the Seanad Proposals.
Electoral lists to be constructed to allow for greater participation of women and
minority groupings

Patricia McKenna -‘Champion of Irish Democracy’ -Green Party -2007 GE Dublin Central September 13, 2010
From the 2007 General election, a leaflet for Green Party candidate and former MEP Patricia McKenna running in Dublin Central.
She polled 1,995 votes and failed to win a seat.
The theme of Champion of Irish Democracy focuses on her Supreme court challenge on Referendum spending.

Ciaran Cuffe -Green Party -1991 Local Elections -South Inner City September 6, 2010
From the 1991 Local Elections a leaflet for Green Party candidate Ciaran Cuffe running in the South Inner City Ward. Cuffe polled 1,141 votes and was elected comfortably. He retained his seat on Dublin City Council in 1999.
Some nice little bits here. I had forgotten about the proposed Motorway on Clanbrassil Street (Which would probably have the 30 kmh limit now!) also “He is a keen cyclist and has ridden his bicycle coast to coast across the U.S.A.”
Lots of other bibs and bobs about policy and Dublin of the time.

‘The Recovery is Green’ writes Green Party candidate for the 2009 Dublin Central by-election David Geary. In a constituency not known for a large Green Vote, Geary polled 819 votes as Maureen O’Sullivan won the seat. Geary also stood in the Local Elections in The North Inner City ward, where he polled 519 votes and failed to get in.

The Hazel Tree Seeds ‘Brown Envelope Campaign’ -Ruairi Holohan -Green Party -Blackrock 2009 LE July 12, 2010
From the 2009 Local Elections in Blackrock, a packet of Hazel Tree seeds from Green Party candidate Ruairi Holohan. The seeds were given out as part of the ‘Brown Envelope Campaign’.
A clever device and a decent intention… but not enough to get him elected as he lost his seat. He polled 809 votes.
I wonder how many Hazel Trees were planted?

A 2001 leaflet where the then Green Party Councillor Eamon Ryan introduces himself to the voters of Dublin South. Ryan was initially elected as a Councillor for the Rathmines Ward in 1999 (I think he was co-opted onto the council prior to that) and was then switched to Dublin South in the run up to the 2002 General Election.
