A leaflet from the National H-Block Committee advertising a “Mass National Lobby and March” in Dublin on the 22nd November 1980.
The Hunger strike of 1980 was the precursor to the 1981 Hunger Strike where ten men died. It began in Long Kesh in October 1980 with Brendan Hughes, Tom McFeeley, Sean McKenna, Leo Green, Tommy McKearney , Raymond McCartney and John Nixon all going on hunger strike for the 5 demands listed below.
Having received assurances that the five demands would be met on a phased basis the hunger strike was stopped on the 18th of December 1980. The assurances were not followed up upon and on the first of March 1981 the ‘second’ Hunger Strike began.

Fianna Fail Advertising Hoarding at Ireland vs Hungary 1989 Lansdowne Road
Saw this and was amused at the Fianna Fail ad at the side of the pitch. The game was held 11 days prior to the 1989 European and General Elections.
Haven’t seen much political sponsorship at sporting events , the last time was possibly Sinn Fein sponsoring a Bohs game in I think 2004 or 2007. Anyone any other examples?

From the 1944 General Election a message to the electorate from then Taoiseach and Fianna Fail Leader Eamon De Valera. In this 1944 Election Fianna Fail gained 9 seats and had an overall majority.
Interesting to see a lot of the message given over to the ills of coalition governments.

Matt Cullen -Young Ireland -1954 General Election Meath
From the 1954 General Election Matt Cullen of Young Ireland who was running in Meath.
‘Young Ireland’ were a group/ party that contested the 1954 General Election fielding 3 candidates. Matthew Cullen in Meath – 155 votes
Eamon Halpin in Dublin South Central – 380 votes and Thomas Healy in Dublin North East – 502 votes.
There is little or nothing about the party available online. I presume that they were influenced by the ideas of the Young Irelanders of the 1800s. None of the three candidates listed appear to have stood in any other elections. There was no sign of Matt Cullen in the 1950 or 1955 Local Elections in Meath.
Should someone have any info on the party I’d love to get it.

Denis O’Driscoll – Córas na Poblachta – Tipperary 1943 General Election
From the 1943 General Election an Ad for Denis O’Driscoll who was running for Córas na Poblachta in Tipperary. O’Driscoll polled 1,297 votes and failed to win a seat . Córas na Poblachta were a Republican Party that existed briefly in the early 1940s. It fielded five candidates in the 1943 General Election. Other than O’Driscoll the candidates were (I think) Simon Donnelly and Sean Dowling in Dublin South. Martin Bell in Dublin North East.
Many members of Córas na Poblachta went on to join and stand for Clann na Poblachta.
