This is slightly off the beaten track election wise. I didn’t even know there was an election for Provost of Trinity until I was contacted and asked if I’d like some leaflets from that election (Many thanks to the sender). I’m fairly sure the electorate is fairly small but thought this might be of interest.
This is a leaflet from Jane Ohlmeyer, currently the Erasmus Smith’s Professor of Modern History at Trinity College Dublin, which was part of her campaign to become Provost.
I’ve leaflets from other candidates which I’ll post in due course.

From 1989 “Why we think you should vote for Michael D.” – Mick Lally, Emmet Bergin and Noel Browne


From the 1989 General Election in Galway West an Ad for Michael D Higgins with endorsements from Mick Lally, Emmet Bergin and Noel Browne, “Why we think you should vote for Michael D.” A big thing then to be endorsed by two actors from Glenroe. In Ireland it is unusual to see public figures backing Dail candidates.
Michael D held on to his seat polling 7,727 votes.
In 1987 he had a similar ad with endorsements from Mary Coughlan, Mick Lally and Noel Browne.

 

Flyer from Gerry Carroll-People Before Profit -2011 West Belfast by-election June 19, 2011


From the recent West Belfast by election a flyer from People Before Profit candidate Gerry Carroll. Carroll polled 1,751 votes 7.6%. It was an increase from the 1,661 votes 4.8% he received at the Assembly elections.

Flyer for Avril Doyle, Alan Gillis -Fine Gael -1999 European Elections Leinster June 18, 2011


From the 1999 European Elections a flyer for Fine Gael candidates Avril Doyle and Alan Gillis. Gillis an ex president of the IFA was a sitting MEP having won the seat in 1994. Doyle an ex TD for Wexford won a seat as Gillis lost his.
Doyle was returned again in 2004 and retired at the 2009 European Elections.

The leaflet cites a poll on the Shell To Sea Campaign for the Indo and tries to show bias in the questions asked etc.

“New Face, New Name, Fresh Start!” Éamonn Walsh -Fianna Fail SW Inner City 2008 June 17, 2011


This is an unusual leaflet, from Fianna Fail candidate Eamonn Walsh.  Éamonn Walsh originally sought the nomination for South West Inner City Ward for Dublin City Council. This leaflet is from the SW Inner City.
However he ended up being selected and winning a seat on South Dublin County Council in the Tallaght Central Ward.
Note the Polish on the leaflet as European Union Citizens are allowed vote in the Local and European Elections.

Pre 1981 General Election profile of Willie O’Dea – “William O’Dea: A first step into the Limelight”


Willie O’Dea when he was William O’Dea. Again not an election leaflet (like the Pat Cox one posted recently) but I thought would be of interest. Its from the run up to the 1981 General Election where William O’Dea has been selected on the Fianna Fail ticket in Limerick East. He failed to win a seat but won a seat in the February 1982 election.

leaflet from Colm McGrath -Independent – Clondalkin 2004 Local Elections


From the 2004 Local Elections a flyer from Independent candidate Colm McGrath running in Clondalkin. McGrath a former Fianna Fail councillor and General Election candidate, was deselected by Fianna Fail for the 1999 Local Elections and was elected as an independent. In this 2004 Election he polled 861 votes and lost his seat.
He ran again in the 2011 General Election polling just 253 votes.
In 2010 he along with other former Fianna Fail councillors Don Lydon, Sean Gilbride and Tony Fox were charged with corruption.

1987 leaflet from Mary O’Rourke, Albert Reynolds, Henry Abbott- Fianna Fail -Longford Westmeath June 14, 2011


Some big names here in this 1987 election leaflet for Mary O’Rourke, Albert Reynolds and Henry Abbott. Reynolds a former Taoiseach, O’Rourke a former minister and leader of The Seanad, whilst Abbott became a high court judge. In this 1987 General Election, all three were elected in the four seat Longford Westmeath. Abbott lost his seat in 1989.

Was sent this lovely clipping. Its not quite Election material but I thought it might be of interest all the same. Its a report from the Limerick Leader (I Think) of Pat Cox moving up to Dublin for the big job in RTE. Mentions his unsuccessful candidacy for Fianna Fail in the 1979 Local Elections in Limerick.

A leaflet produced by Fianna Fail senator Jim Walsh during the 2011 Seanad Election campaign. Walsh was running for a seat on the Agricultural Panel. The “Easter Rising 1916 -95th Commemoration 2011” theme is a picture of the executed leaders on the front, a speech given by Jim Walsh on Easter Sunday 1991, the 75th anniversary of the rising , with the Proclamation on the back of the leaflet.

“Cabra… Stand Up Against Drugs!” -Tony Gregory 2005 flyer. June 13, 2011


A simple flyer from the Late Tony Gregory where he is pictured at the launch of S.N.A.P (Say No and Phone) campaign in Dublin Central. On the reverse is a calendar for 2006.
Active opposition to the scourge of drugs in Dublin Central (and beyond) was a constant throughout Gregorys career.
