1987 letter from Albert Reynolds to Constituents asking for support. March 6, 2011

From the 1987 General Election campaign a letter from Albert Reynolds to voters in Longford Westmeath asking for support. I presume the letter was sent only in Longford as it has the plea that “..Longford needs its own Minister”.
In the event Reynolds topped the poll and was duly appointed Minister for Industry and Commerce.

Mae Sexton- Independent 1992 -Longford Roscommon November 10, 2009

New Labour Party recruit, Mae Sexton was initially elected to Longford County Council and UDC in 1991 as an Independent.
This is her missive from the 1992 General Election.
Over the years a number of Independent Councillors such as Mae Sexton and Kate Walsh joined the PDs.
Here though Mae ‘never felt that joining a political party would accomodate the free expression of my points of view’.
She was also opposed to Service charges and a number of other items that could have seemed incompatible with the PDs.
In 2010 she joined the Labour Party. Another councillor to do so was John Kelly in neighbouring Roscommon.

Louis Belton, John Connor, Liam Naughten -Fine Gael 1992 Longford-Roscommon October 7, 2009

In 1992 the newly founded Longford-Roscommon constituency.  John Connor was the only one of the 3 candidates to be elected. The Jobs proposals may bring back memories of how desperate we were to create jobs and stop the awful flow of emigration.
