He was elected in 1997.

Amongst other reasons, Boundary changes meant he stood for Dublin City Council in 2009. He failed to win a seat.

From the 2004 Local Elections a leaflet focused on the Qarryvale/ Palmerstown areas from Green Party candidate Fintan McCarthy. McCarthy who had been co-opted to replace his friend Paul Gogarty in 2003 polled 2,440 votes and was easily elected.
Tragically, in 2006 Fintan McCarthy and his girlfriend Sonya Rabbitte died in a road accident whilst holidaying in China.
