The front page of The Carlow People Newspaper (many thanks to them for sending it on) with a plea to “”Keep it Carlow”.
Similar headlines will be appearing up and down the country this week in Two County Constituencies.
For all the National we are still very much local.

John Coonan -Fianna Fail -Kilkenny Local Elections 2009 April 27, 2010
From the 2009 local elections in Kilkenny, Fianna Fail candidate John Coonan. The long serving Councillor Coonan was elected to both Kilkenny County Council and Kilkenny Borough Council. I like the way Kilkenny castle is in the background.

Mary White -Green Party – Carlow-Kilkenny 2007 GE April 16, 2010
From the 2007 General Election a flyer for Green Party Deputy Leader Mary White running in Carlow-Kilkenny.
Mary White was elected. It was her third attempt at winning the seat.
There was at least one attack on her house on the run up to the election, due (allegedly) to her outspoken views on anti social behaviour in the constituency. Her house had also been a target in 2006.
Walter Lacey -Progressive Democrat -2007 GE Carlow -Kilkenny March 28, 2010
From the 2007 General Election in Carlow -Kilkenny Progressive Democrat candidate Walter Lacey. Carlow based Walter Lacey polled 1,073 votes and failed to be elected.
Having been a County Councillor since 1989, Lacey was elected in 2009 as an Independent.
In 1987 Carlow Kilkenny returned a PD TD Martin Gibbons.
(Many thanks to Walter Lacey for sending me this at the time)

Seamus Pattison- Labour -Carlow Kilkenny 1992 GE February 13, 2010
Seamus Pattison was first elected in 1961 for Carlow-Kilkenny and served until 2007. He served two Dail terms as Ceann Comhairle and was for a long time also ‘Father of the house’ (an honour which Enda Kenny now holds).
The Father of Seamus Pattison, James Pattison also served as a TD from 1932-51 and 1954-57.

Phil Hogan, John Browne ,Andy Cotterell -Fine Gael Carlow-Kilkenny- 1992 December 2, 2009
From the 1992 General Election a leaflet from Fine Gael Carlow Kilkenny candidates John Browne, Andy Cotterell and Phil Hogan. Both Hogan and Browne were elected with Cotterell again falling short as he had done in 1989.

Eddie Collins-Hughes -Carlow-Kilkenny 2002 GE November 21, 2009
Eddie Collins-Hughes from the 2002 General election in Carlow-Kilkenny. Eddie was looking for a fairer society. He polled 1,614 votes.

Kevin Fennelly, Liam Aylward, MJ Nolan, Evelyn White -Fianna Fail Carlow-Kilkenny 1992 October 14, 2009
Fianna Fail had hopes of taking that elusive third seat here with Hurler Kevin Fennelly.
However on the day it was Kilkenny based Liam Aylwards massive first preference vote combined with Kilkenny based Seamus Pattison riding on the Spring Tide meant he had little chance of winning a seat.
Aylward also mentions that he is a ‘prominent member of the GAA’, in fact the same club as Kevin Fennelly!
Kevin Fennelly is the uncle of Hurling star Henry Shefflin.
Evelyn White – Fianna Fail Carlow-Kilkenny 1992 October 6, 2009
Not a great success in that Evelyn polled just over a thousand votes.
Looking at the leaflet she says ‘Since being selected as the third candidate at the FF convention….’
Was the fourth Fianna Fail candidate Kevin Fennelly added by HQ? Given his and his families sporting prowess it wouldn’t have gone down well with the other Kilkenny based candidates.
