From the 1953 Galway South By Election a leaflet from Clann na Talmhan candidate Thomas McNamara. The By Election was caused by the death of Fianna Fail TD (and former Ceann Comhairele) Frank Fahy. McNamara polled 629 votes. The leaflet is a message from Party leader and Mayo South TD Joseph Blowick. It outlines some of the issues faced by Farmers at the time.

Whilst they asked for a YEs vote for the Right to Travel and Right to Information, they asked for a NO vote on the Abortion issue. Many of the reasons for voting against the Referendum outlined by O’Malley are just as relevant today as they were then.

The headline of “Fianna Fail Will Never Take Risks With The Economy” particularly caught my eye. You may notice too that the statement was made at Sean Quinn’s Slieve Russel Hotel.

The flyer gives details of Advice centres, his availability and that even if hes not present that he will ‘Personally deal with the query later’. For groups or organisations there were invites to make ‘Special Arrangements’ to meet him in St Lukes.
