Fianna Fail 1959 Referendum on change in voting system”Give Yourself a Really Effective Vote” -Vote Yes August 17, 2011
From the 1959 Referendum on the voting system Fianna Fail material looking for a yes vote. They wanted to implement a first past the post system like the one that exists in the UK. The real point of the exercise was to enable Fianna Fail to get an overall majority, yet this wasn’t used in their official arguements listed here.
The Referendum was defeated by a narrow enough margin of 51.79% of voters voting No and 48.21% voting Yes.
In 1968 a similar Referendum was held on changing the voting system which was again rejected by voters.

Ad with Yes and No arguements for the 1997 Referendum on Cabinet Confidentiality March 28, 2011
Had this lying about at home, an Ad from the 1997 Referendum on Cabinet Confidentiality produced by a predecessor of the Referendum Commission. The Referendum was passed by a narrowish margin. 52.65% Voted Yes and 47.35% voted No.
The arguments for and against the Referendum are presented.

From the 1972 Referendum on entry to the EEC an ad from Fine Gael urging a Yes vote.
Amongst the arguments used are that Britain will be entering and as they accounted for 65% of our exports that Ireland has to enter too.
We will be attractive for Foreign investment and the EEC will pay the farming subsidies that Taxpayers paid.
There was also the argument that if the North was in the EEC and we were not, then reunification of the island would be more difficult.
The Referendum was passed.
