Irish Election Literature

The Democratic Left were opposed to Water charges, Water Tax or Water Rates. They wanted to put pressure on other councillors to oppose them too.
Looking at the previous years vote thats shown, some Fine Gael and Fianna Fail voted against the charges.
The Government were seen to be bringing in these extra taxes whilst at the same time having the Tax Amnesty.
In 1985 the Councils in Dublin, following the election of councillors such as The Democratic Lefts Eamon Gilmore…….” took a bit of phrasing considering Gilmore was elected for The Workers Party.

A few pages from “SUPERSPI” magazine from June July 1978 – Socialist Party of Ireland

SUPERSPI was a magazine produced by The Socialist Party of Ireland, a group that existed between 1971 and 1982. There’s more details on them here and here.
The magazine itself is actually quite good with a witty enough cover and some decent columns. The story about the ITGWU conference is one in particular that I enjoyed. I’m not sure how many issues of it were produced .

The full magazine will appear in pdf form on The Cedar Lounge in due course.

Leaflet from Barry Desmond -Labour- November 1982 General Election -Dun Laoghaire

From the November 1982 General Election a leaflet for Labour candidate in Dun Laoghaire Barry Desmond. Given the short length of time between the two elections in 1982 the leaflet is very similar to the February 1982 one with the same family picture and indeed picture of the candidate himself. The layout is also similar. The main difference being the picture of the trendy ‘youth’.
Barry Desmond was re elected polling 6,130 votes and was subsequently appointed Minister for Social Welfare and Minister for Health.
