“One Labour Man for Louth and Meath!” – Cathal O’Shannon -Labour Party -1922 General Election -Louth Meath December 8, 2013

From the 1922 General Election a flyer for Cathal O’Shannon who was running for Labour in the Louth Meath Constituency. He topped the poll and was elected, however he lost his seat running in Louth in 1923 and failed to be elected again in 1927 when running in Meath.
He was a founding member of the Socialist Party of Ireland, led by James Connolly. His wikipedia entry gives details of an interesting life. He was the father of the late broadcaster and journalist Cathal O’Shannon.

Flyer from Brendan McGahon, Lord Henry Mountcharles -Fine Gael- 1992 General Election -Louth December 12, 2012


From the 1992 General Election a flyer from Fine Gael candidates in Louth Brendan McGahon and Lord Henry Mountcharles.  McGahon was elected, whilst Mountcharles, of Slane Castle fame,  polled 4,161 votes and narrowly missed out on a seat.

1982 Seanad Administrative Panel Leaflet from Brendan McGahon -Fine Gael November 13, 2012


From the 1982 Seanad Election, held after the February 1982 General Election, a leaflet for Fine Gael candidate Brendan McGahon, who was running for a seat on the Administrative Panel. McGahon narrowly missed out on a seat but did win a seat a few months later in the November 1982 General Election. The sometimes outspoken TD held his Louth seat until his retirement in 2002. He is one of the few TDs that played League of Ireland football, as he did with Dundalk.

His father, T.F. McGahon, was one of the inaugural members of Dundalk Urban District Council when it was created along with other Irish local authorities by the British Government in 1898. *source
