A leaflet from Patrick Costello who will be contesting the 2014 Local Elections in Rathgar/Rathmines ward for the Green Party. The leaflet introduces himself to voters in the area.

He’s a local who was raised around the Ranelagh area and now work as a social worker covering part of the area as such he’s seen a lot of the
frontline community issues and would like to focus on them for the election.

A 2004 Ad for Fianna Fails Jim O’Callaghan from the match programme for Leinster Vs Cardiff Blues 23rd Jan 2004 in Lansdowne Road. O’Callaghan ran in the Rathmines Ward polling 902 votes and failed to win a seat.
The score of the match was Leinster 20 Cardiff Blues 17… I’ve also included a scan of the team line ups should anyone be interested.

Leaflet from Michael McShane -Fine Gael -1991 Local Elections Rathmines July 3, 2012


From the 1991 Local Elections a flyer from Fine Gael candidate Michael McShane who was running in Rathmines
In 1974 he polled 1,276 votes and narrowly missed out on a seat before being elected in 1979 and reelected in 1985. He polled 507 votes in these 1991 Local Elections and lost his seat.

Flyer from Michael Donnelly, Mary Hanafin, Derek Mooney -Fianna Fail -1991 Local Elections-Rathmines June 27, 2012


From the 1991 Local Elections a flyer for Fianna Fail candidates Michael Donnelly, Mary Hanafin and Derek Mooney who were running in Rathmines. Michael Donnelly topped the poll with 1,985 votes whilst Mary Hanafin polled 1,083 votes and lost the seat she had won in 1985. Derek Mooney polled 309 votes and also missed out. (Result here)

From 1936 a poster advertising a meeting to set up a branch of the Irish Christian Front in Rathmines Town Hall. ” Show by your presence at this meeting that Ireland Rejects Communism”.
More information on The Irish Christian Front here and from here a brief description of their aims..

The aim of the Irish Christian Front is to organise a united Irish front of all those who are opposed to Communism and its allies in Ireland, for the creation of a social order worthy of the Christian professions, and to send medical aid and supplies to the patriot soldiers of Spain, and to assist the refugee victims of the Red government.

Who Can You Trust? -6 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Before June 11th
The PDs were the answers to all six questions. Despite polling a decent enough 1,020 votes Williams failed to win a seat.

Alan Robinson -Progressive Democrats -1999 Local Elections Rathmines. May 14, 2010


A flyer detailing his advice clinics from former PD Councillor Alan Robinson in the run up to the 1999 Local Elections.
Alan Robinson had been co-opted to replace Liz O’Donnell in 1997 but failed to hold on to the seat in 1999.
In May 2003 he was given a six-month jail sentence and fined €1,000 after being convicted of possessing child pornography. Story here

Tony Williams-Progressive Democrats -2004 Local Elections Rathmines May 11, 2010


From the 2004 Local Elections, Progressive Democrat candidate Tony WIlliams running in the Rathmines Ward.
Despite polling over 1000 votes Tony Williams failed to win a seat.
The PDs are taking credit for ‘preserving Lansdowne Road as a major national sports centre here in Dublin City’.
They were still getting mileage from Mary Harneys ban on Smokey coal 14 years earlier.

Mary Hanafin, Michael Donnelly, Gerry Kieran and Derek Mooney- Fianna Fail Rathmines 1985 October 19, 2009


A young Mary Hanafin in her fisrt electoral outing in Rathmines 1985. Both Hanafin polling 890 votes and Donnelly polling 2133 votes were elected. Derek Mooney polled 534 votes and Gerry Kieran 849 votes and both missed out.
